Christian White has become known for his twisty narratives that make you reevaluate everything you have been reading about two thirds of the way through his books. The Long Night is no exception. But this book is, if anything faster than his previous books so readers will have even less time to think about the small discrepancies in the narrative that might just point to… something else.
The Long Night starts with a date in a small town that turns into a kidnapping. Em has gone to a pub to meet Holly, who she has been corresponding with online, for the first time, but on the way back to Holly’s house they are waylaid and kidnapped starting a frightening survival odyssey. Jodie, meanwhile, learns from a masked intruder into her home that her daughter has been kidnapped. But before Jodie can find out what the man wants he is severely injured by her friend Mike who has come to the rescue. Jodie, though, seems to have what it takes to push through this setback to find the other kidnapper.
The start is propulsive and White never lets the pressure up on either Em or Jodie (or the reader) moving from cliffhanger to cliffhanger as he jumps between their narratives as things get more and more out of control. And that is even before readers are keyed in to what this is really all about and the pace increases even further. Overall, White delivers a twisty thriller that almost demands to be read in one sitting.
