The Summer War is a fantasy novella from Naomi Novik, best known for her Scholomance dark academia series. Despite its short length Novik manages to deliver plenty of lore and deliver a few new twists to some more traditional fairy tale fare.

When The Summer War opens twelve year old Celia has come into her powers without realising it and curses her brother Argent on the day that he announces that he is giving up his inheritance to go questing in the Summerlands. Celia and Argent’s father is a nobel who led the Kings forces to victory over the Summerfolk who invade the land (only during summer) as a reprisal for past the death of their King’s sister. Celia finds as she grows up that she has to navigate her newfound power, which makes her desirable as a match for the prince, reconcile with her remaining brother and find a way to help Argent and lift her curse.

The Summer War is a page-turning tale that relies not just on Celia but on her brothers and the way they support each other. Novik efficiently creates a fascinating fantasy world that relies on some familiar rules but is unique in its own way. The Summer War can easily be read in one sitting and almost begs readers to do just that.
